What do you love about Somerset West?
The mountains; the view of False Bay; the townships of Lwandle and Nomzamo; our local wine farm workers, some of whom we visit regularly to check on their pets; our vets who give up so much of their time for us; the friendly people here; the "swallows" (those folk from overseas who come to SA every summer) who give so generously to our charity; we have been in Somerset West since l974 and never want to leave...
How long have you been operating here?
Jillian was with HH Animal Welfare Society since the early eighties as their fundraiser and Hon. Inspector.
She realised there was a special need to concentrate on the townships of Lwandle and Nomzamo so in 2003, with her daughter, Vanessa, started Township Animal Rescue, later to be registered as an NPO...O39 758
Vanessa runs a weekly clinic on a Thursday in Lwandle/Nomzamo and often gets call outs during the week to attend to and bring sick animals to the vets for treatment.
Describe your business...
We rescue, treat and re-home many dogs and cats. We have a free advertisement weekly with the District Mail and take our animals regularly to an Adopt-a-Pet at the local Craft Markets and Veldwinkels at Southeys Vines... we also attend many other functions at this venue.
We are always looking for good foster homes, especially for very young puppies and kittens. Our vets are from Gordons Bay Animal Hospital and Helderberg Animal Hospital.
- They run weekly clinics in the townships (Lwandle/Nomzamo) for minor medical treatments.
- They transport pets from the townships to local vets for major treatments.
- They have put a sterilization program in place.
- They rescue the neglected and unwanted pets for which they try and find loving homes.
How do you see the future of your line of business in Swest?
With food prices constantly rising and many people out of work, I can see our work in the townships escalating. More and more people will be unable to feed their dogs (let alone themselves) and we will, MOST regrettably, have to euthanase more and more pathetic animals.
In your opinion, where's the "swestiest" place to be right now?
At home with all of our rescued animals!!!
